Life is like a box of chocolate...

You will never know how you feel... until the time comes and you cannot do it.

PS3 Gaming review 2008

Last days of the year. Been watching news programmes giving recaps of the major happenings in 2008. Financial tsunami, earthquakes, flooding in Myanmar/burma, Hollywood actors returning to space and so on. My own review of 2008 will be a tribute to the PS3. Over the last couple of months, apart from a special someone, it was this little powerful monster which turned my nightmare into daylight.

Starting off with games which I have not gotten...

1) Fallout 3

2) Valkyria Chronicles

3) Motorstorm - Pacific Rift

Of the 3, I'm really looking forward to Valkyria Chronicles. Really the type of game I'm into, strategy war games. Still don't know much about Fallout 3 but the hype about it is enough to get me interested. And one really need a decent racing game, and MSPR got enough good reviews to tempt my wallet.

Now let me see the games which I've gotten this year.... sorted by purchase date:
1) Ghost Recon 2 - Advanced Warfighter [X]
2) Dynasty Warriors 5 [X]
3) GTA IV [X]
4) Assassin's Creed
5) Call of Duty - Modern Warfare [X]
6) Call of Duty - World at War
7) Naruto - Ultimate Ninja Storm [X]
8) LittleBigPlanet [X]
9) Resistance 2
10) Metal Gear Solid 4 - Sons of the Patriots

[X] denotes completion of at least 1 storyline in game

My top 3 games for the year:

1) MGS4

2) LittleBigPlanet

3) GTA IV

Tied for 4th will be the 2 Call of Duty games, Naruto and Resistance 2. Looking at the list, I can't help but notice alot of 3rd person and/or war games, no strategy games, no RPGs and no sports.

All in all a great year for PS3. What's next? I really have no idea but I enjoy the feeling of not having enough money to buy games I want, definitely way more than I like the feeling of having already gotten all the games that I want... PS3 owners will know that feeling....

Here's to a great gaming 2009~

Black Monday

Talking about a bad and lousy Monday yesterday...

1) Got embroiled in a case of gangster telemarketeers at work. Left another bad taste in my mouth and negative*99999 to my image of HK as a free market. Though in a way let off the hook in the end, I'm still figuring out how I could have avoided it. Hong Kong should be renamed Chow Kong...

2) CNY is coming and my brother come SMSing... coincidence? And to think I was beginning to get worried about him over the weekend. If this is sibling telepathy then I think I don't need it. I think for his welfare, he think for my money. Sucks.

3) My throat got so bad that I got to visit the doctor. I must give credit to the good government of HK for creating a cigarette-free environment in all eateries and buildings. Forcing the smokers to take their habits to the streets. They smoke as they walk, wait at the bus-stop, standing in front of buildings, sitting in their taxis and mini-buses, and while having a dump in the toilet. Chow Kong once more... Of course, going to the karaoke last Saturday with my already battered throat didn't help a bit...

On another note, I'm working like 4+ days over a 20 day period. Not a bad way to end the year. 2-day golf trip on the 1st day of the new year to cap off my holidays. A great way to start the new year. And after like 4 visits to the ice skating rink in the last 3 weeks or so, I don't think I'll be stepping on ice/snow anytime soon...

I'm going to buy myself a basketball soon... I need the exercise... and what better way than to chase the basketball around the court like a dog? Exercise for myself and entertainment for everyone watching~

Korea Trip 18-22 Dec 2008

Day 1 - After a 3-hour midnight flight we reached 0-degree Celsius Incheon airport. First stop was the war museum for nothing more than a toilet break and some photos. Didn't even make it into the museum itself but I've been there so nothing lost. Anyway I needed a sleep before anything... Next stop was outlet shopping. Cheap Converse and clothings but size availability really depending on your luck. Golf clubs wasn't that cheap to me though.

A pork rib hotpot lunch later we were off to get our ski wear rental. After that we were off to the resort. First on the itinery at the resort was a trip to the indoor heated pool. Had a great time on the slides with neon lights lining the first half of the trip, total blackness on the latter half before sending you out into the outdoor pool. A quick scramble back into the indoor~

Dinner on the 1st night was Korean BBQ. Best meal of the whole trip. Followed by best sleep of the whole trip...

Day 2 - Ski day. Got the gears immediately after breakfast, followed by a 1-hour lesson (comes with a certificate but I assure you it is not enough to prevent bruises...).

We went up the lift. Nearly missed our landing. After we reached the top in 1 piece, downhill tumbling we went... I was going down so fast that with whatever control I mastered in 1 hour that I zoomed between an really pissed off Korean ski instructor and his charges. I was the first to reach the bottom in 1 piece. Twice I climbed up to rescue the rest of the tumbling platoon. Skiing is fun. Skiing is more fun when you are well trained. Tumbling on the slope is no fun. Period. D was upset that we didn't have more time on the slopes. The rest of us were glad that it was over for the day. Maybe a second day of skiing would have been better.

After cup noodle lunch in our room we took the cable car to the top of the skiing mountain. Real snow on the ground. Freezing cold winds. And snowboarders going down slopes so steep it really brought back some bad memories of the earlier tumbling session.

Returned our ski gear to the rental and off we went for dinner. Mushroom hotpot. More kimchi. More strawberries from the FamilyMart. Love the strawberries there.

Day 3 - A lovely surprise greeted us on the morning of the 3rd day. Snowfall arrived and everyone had a great time watching the snow raining on our heads. My first time with falling snow. Trees covered with snow really gave the resort another feel. Unfortunately we were on a tour and had to leave the resort as per itinery. Next stop, Everland~

First on the itinery was a trip on the safari ride in the park. Performing bears, lions and other animals running alongside the bus. There was even a pair of ligers, offsprings of tiger and lion. Really fascinating animals. Then it was lunch and one of the restaurants there served really good pork knuckles and roasted chicken.

Everland had this wonderfully enormous roller coaster ride. Really the main attraction of the whole place if you ask me. 140km/h, near vertical slopes and seat belt which only secures your thighs and not your shoulders... recipe for thrill~ Bad point about following a tour: Not enough time to cover all the rides... or even a second on the big roller coaster.

After Everland we were brought to this ice gallery where everything in the big freezer was carved from ice. And we had a chance to chisel out our very own beer mug, failing which you can still try to make a wine glass from the remaining ice. Then ginseng chicken dinner. Never really liked it since my first try, still don't really like it. But happy to see chicken meat.

Checked in at the Intercontinental, went to the tiny casino for a look and then embarked on a shopping trip in the underground mall at COEX. Supermarkets closing at 9pm = BAD. Dunkin Donuts = GOOD. End of day 3... dead beat...

Day 4 - Last full day in Korea. It was a day of shopping and street foods. First stop was the presidential grounds for some photo-taking. It was still too early for shopping. But after that it was shopping all the way~~~

With the Won at a low, shopping was irresistible. I just loved visiting all the street side food stalls. And there was this stick of strawberries being coated with a layer of candy. Really crowded shopping streets not unlike Harajuku.

Dinner on the last night was most disappointing but we ordered a gigantic crab. The crab was cheaper and tastier than those in Japan. Definitely worth the money.

All in all a wonderful holiday. A few pros and cons with joining a tour but with a group of young and old it's always better to have a tour. And coming to a country where we don't speak the language at all... its really a load off our shoulders. Maybe for the next skiing holiday to Japan we will go on an F&E...

"I know you can see the hospital, just call 999!"

Back from Korea. Weather there... -9 degree C. Here in Hong Kong it is 10+ degrees. Somehow it feels warm here. More on that in later posts. Apart from disappointing soccer results, there were many news which caught my attention.

This article confirms that HK is in a third-world medical state. Imagine yourself, within steps away from the hospital doors, approaching a security guard/clerk for assistance and he tells you the following, "Sir, you will need to call an ambulance." You wait for death while the services despatch an ambulance from their station.

24 minutes later you are in the hospital, watching your lifeless body from somewhere under the ceiling, cursing and swearing at those stupid staff with a lack of initiative, a lack of brains and a lack of human touch.

But hey~ this is Hong Kong~

Not that really p*sses me off!

Took the taxi to work this morning. Alighted at a heavy junction. A HKD30.00 fare on the meter, I gave the driver HKD50. He returned me HKD13.00. Last I remember a HKD37.00+ fare will work out to around HKD40.00+ on the new fare scheme. Another lazy morning with the taxis... But once again, I didn't have to queue-jump against queue-jumpers for my taxi this morning. The good, the bad and the money-faced taxi-drivers... Oh well...

Went to Disneyland on Saturday. Reaffirmed my opinion that it is much smaller than the one in Tokyo (even without taking Disneysea into the comparison). And one of the warmest December in recent years made the experience forgettable. It is really a Disneyland made for China... at HK prices. HKD350 for entrance in HK against nearly HKD500 for Tokyo (which will only get you into either Land or Sea), one can't really compare the 2.

Another weekend of underperforming top teams in the EPL. This might be the one... underperforming Liverpool need the whole EPL to be underperforming to win the league... Very different from the team of the 80s. But then again footballers in this century are playing more games per season, with faster balls and getting killed faster with internet spreading gossips at lightning speed.

And who audited the auditors who audited Madoff?

T4XI

After the 2nd price increase in a year, I can say that taxis in HK are becoming too expensive. And after getting hijacked on more than 1 occasion since the price revision, I've decided that I will try to cut down on taxi rides from 2009.

Not sure if any of you out there realise that it is easier to flag a taxi down these days. Business seems to have taken a hit for taxi dudes since the price amendment. Why wouldn't it... a HKD30+ ride to office weeks ago has turned into a nearly HKD50 ride recently. And they are purposely making schoolboy mistakes, taking me on longer routes or into heavily congested region even when I have informed them of the route to take (and which they acknowledged! Now that's infuriating!). And just last night I was on a taxi with a driver who stank. It was as if he had been staying in the car for weeks and have not taken a shower...

Any sympathy for the taxi drivers? Nope. Not at all. Green, red or blue taxis. I don't care. I will continue to call the uncle with the discount taxi when I need to go to the airport. At least he give better services.

And the free economy of HK allowed petrol stations to keep the price of petroleum at its peak. You mean HK petrol stations are still paying the same USD150/barrel price to their sources?

Cutting bus rebates, increasing taxi fares for short rides, high petrol prices... Oh well... life just gets tougher... and the chickens must get the dreaded H5N1 now.

LittleBigPlanet... RetrenchmentPlanet

LittleBigPlanet is a great platform game. 3 player running around like the screen like Super Mario Bros, grabbing and pulling each other, sitting on roller coasters, dressing up and turning into lions or zebras, dancing around, making funny faces, challenging yet hilarious boss fights... It's really a gem...

The first few stages were giveaways but 2 days into the game we were already struggling to complete stages. Probably by tonight we will be giving up on some stages... hahaha~ But its all good fun... can't wait to explore some more.

But that's a fantasy planet. The real world is not so happy. News of people getting retrenched just struck a little bit closer when one of my primary school classmate got THE letter today. Guess no one's immune from this storm...

Oh well... one day at a time... escape to gaming world...

Weather forecast in HK

Temperatures (outdoor) : 16-19 Deg Celsius
Temperatures (indoor) : Approx 15 Deg Celsius

Can never understand the logic here. Whenever you walk into a major shopping centre in HK you will get the urge to put on your coat. Its one thing walking outside and letting the wind hit you in the face, and another walking indoors and letting the aircon blow down on your neck while you are eating sushi.

The amount of static electricity all over the place is frightening... the amount of electrocution I'm getting is nothing short of crazy... I've been shocked so many times this year that I have developed a habit of touching the wooden door before I turn the knob...

I don't like the cold. I don't like winter. I don't mind if its just for a holiday though...

Naruto on PS3!

The game is quite addictive. The starting arc, whereby you are sent to missions to learn how to perform simple tasks, was kind of slow and repetitive. But you must get through those stages to earn enough missions points to progress to the later missions.

I think its from the 3rd arc onwards when one get to battle 300ft monsters. Now that's really where the fun begins! I'm not really a fan of 1-to-1 fighting in the game although its quite fun pulling off ninjutsu (Mashing buttons in a sequence which is different every time) and watching the anime. But fighting the big monsters is really a different thing altogether~

The 1st half of the fight is pretty much like the 1-to-1 fighting engine, just a much larger opposition. Halfway through the fight it becomes pretty much like watching the anime (the graphics in the game is so good you feel like you are watching anime all the time... ) and you have to react to a series of button-mashing or entering a sequence of buttons to pull off or evade attacks. Failing it and you get a hit, pulling it off and you will be rewarded with more glorious animation of your character hitting the big baddies.

I'm glad I bought this game. I'm glad I bought COD. I'm not so sure on LittleBigPlanet though... Maybe I need to spend a little bit of time to see what all this hype is all about. Maybe I should get Resistance 2 or Motorstorm 2 on the way home tonight...

Incompetent? Most of the times... but...

I've always been a HKGov-basher. And recently the number of bashers have increased here in HK. Many here in HK are pinning the blame on the HKGov for the death of the poor chap who died while rushing from Bangkok to Phuket for a flight home. He died in a traffic accident.

So what if the HKGov chartered flights to Phuket? There wasn't any other airport open and he must make the trip down to Phuket, no? Are they expecting the HKGov to charter 1st class tour buses and wait for them in Bangkok's airport as well? Rush people down to Bangkok airport and search for HKers, informing them of the flights available in Phuket? What if the members of the support team met with any mishaps? The critics may very well turn in the other direction and blame HKGov for spending resources in a financial downturn and risking HKers lives.

It's a crisis~ Look, even if the man was rushing for a charter flight, he would have died as well. Or people expect that chartered flights will give that man more will power to survive?

I think alot of these critics won't even stand a chance in a class of 7-year-olds. So if you want to call the HKGov incompetent, there are many other issues...

New games on the PS3 again!

Went Mongkok last Saturday to meet up with a long lost primary school friend. Thanks facebook~ Before meeting him I went on my PS3 games shopping spree. My list was headed by Valryria Chronicles, Resistance 2 and Call of Duty:World at war. In the end I only managed Call of Duty as the other were out of stock... Also got myself Little Big Planet and Naruto. Naruto wasn't meant for myself but...

Had a go on Naruto. Great graphics, especially when the specials come out fine. D, who arrived on Sunday, is having more fun exploring the Hidden Leaf village than fighting. For a moment I thought he is not into violence...

Next up COD. We played Co-op story mode. Now this is when a bigger LCD TV or a second PS3 will be really useful. Half a screen each just not good enough for me. But gameplay has been an absolute blast! And seeing D stabbing away at wounded enemies make me realise that he is into violence after all...

Haven't had a go at Little Big Planet except installing the game data. Probably take an MC tomorrow to play it. See... I'm having a flu and I really need to rest... Maybe I should get Resistance 2, Motor Storm:Pacific Rift and Valkryia Chronicles before I go home today...
