As I start to research on the options for short/long-term stay in Japan in preparation of retirement, I figured that hotel stays will 1) cost too much and 2) not be able to provide a kitchen for some cooking if I so desire.
A quick search on Google/ChatGPT got me to these websites:
All these websites offer short-term rental of apartments with minimum 1-month lease which is great if you want to have bigger space and kitchen facilities while paying less rent. Of course what you give up will be housekeeping services and hotel security.
I'm looking at long-stay options because i plan to send my kid over for language exchange programme in Japan since he's taking JLPT N4 in the coming 2025 December or 2026 June exams. I think just passing exams beat the point of learning a new language. Immersing one in the environment is the best way to not just improve language skills but also learn phrases you do not see on the textbooks. That experience came from my 3-month stay in Japan to learn the language as well as my 5+ years working in HK when I learnt Cantonese from scratch and without going for lessons.
Waseda University in Tokyo has been offering a 3-week short-term Japanese course since 2012. I think there's no better time than now to send my kid over so that he can not only level-up his Japanese language skill in a short span of time, but also have a taste of overseas-living. Unlike going for holidays, living long-term in an accommodation without housekeeping means he will have to help out with taking out the garbage and grocery shopping.
I feel these are the life lessons a parent can provide for their children, and not some fancy gift~
